Urgent call for the end of student criminalisation and the re-establishment of dialogue between the authorities and students of the National Autonomous University of Honduras

(June 27, 2017) In light of the deepening crisis in student rights and the prevention of the defence of the right to education, the undersigned regional and international civil society organisations and networks, urgently call upon the authorities of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) to immediately re-establish dialogue with the University Student Movement (Movimiento Estudiantil Universitario: MEU), ensuring full compliance with the content and spirit of the agreements reached on July 20, 2016.

Realisation of the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl

This report was prepared pursuant to Human Rights Council resolution 32/20. It underlines the multiple and intersecting obstacles that limit effective and equal access of girls to education and highlights good practices to address those barriers. It also contains recommendations on appropriate measures to ensure the equal enjoyment of the right to education by every girl and, in that context, eliminate all gender disparities in education by 2030, in fulfilment of the commitment made in Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Investing in the crisis: private participation in the education of Syrian refugees

Of the 57 million children worldwide without access to education, over one third lives in settings of conflict and fragility (UNESCO, 2015). The escalating crisis in Syria has contributed significantly to this out-of-school population, with well over half of 1.4 million Syrian refugee children and adolescents not in school (UNICEF, 2016).

France commits to act against commercialisation of education in international cooperation

The French Minister of State for Development and Francophonie, Jean-Marie le Guen, declared yesterday that ‘France will act against any attempts at commercialisation of education’ in international cooperation. He added that France considers that ‘education is a public service’ and ‘a common good that cannot be profited from’.

Court rules that Swiss Muslim girls must attend mixed-sex swimming lessons

In a judgment (in French) handed down on 10 January 2017, the European Court of Human Rights unanimously ruled that Switzerland had not violated the right to freedom of religion under Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights by refusing to grant an exemption to two Muslim girls from attending mixed-sex swimming lessons.
