Historic recognition by States of the Abidjan Principles on the right to education by top UN human rights body

PRESS RELEASE - (Geneva, 15 July 2019) The United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted without a vote last Thursday a new resolution on the right to education and in doing so firmly recognised the Abidjan Principles on the right to education. This is the first formal recognition to date by States of this new instrument, the Human Rights Council being made up of 47 States elected by their peers.

New landmark Abidjan Principles on the right to education and private actors adopted by experts

(13 February 2019, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire) 

A group of human rights experts from around the world adopted the Abidjan Principles on the right to education today, following three years of consultations, reflection, and drafting. The Abidjan Principles seek to strengthen existing efforts to ensure that everyone’s right to education is protected in the context of growing, and often unregulated private actor involvement in education.

Sadly, for many learners in South Africa’s public education system, the enjoyment of this right is constantly being threatened by an array of historical and administrative challenges. Under apartheid, historically ‘black’ schools were cruelly underfunded and under-resourced and this legacy has led to many public schools facing systemic problems that still persist to this day.
