Migration and displacement are global issues that present profound challenges to countries in a number of different ways. One such challenge is the impact of migration and displacement, both within countries and across borders, on education, on those who leave, those who stay, and on those national education systems that host migrants and displaced persons.

(Brussels, Berlin, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris, Rome, 16 November  2018) In a breakthrough Resolution adopted this week, the European Parliament declared that the European Commission must not use development aid money to fund commercial private schools.

On the occasion on World Teachers' Day 2018 on 5 October, UNESCO has published a concept note to highlight that the right to education is not just about access to education but also includes quality education, which requires qualified teachers.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) on the right to education, Koumbou Boly Barry, submitted a report to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the right to education,  which focuses on the right to education for refugees. The report, available here, will be presented on 19^th October at the UNGA and broadcasted via UN Web TV.

Right to Education Initiative (RTE) has recently published its Annual Report, highlighting its work and impacts on the right to education carried out in 2017. RTE’s work in 2017 focused on four thematic areas:

Right to Education Initiative, together with civil society groups in Kenya, Uganda, and Liberia, supported a letter sent by Global Justice Now to UK's International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt to halt funding for Bridge International Academies. Bridge runs over 500 private schools in India, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, and Uganda which have been criticised for their poor teaching methods including the use of invariable, scripted lessons to be read out from tablets.

At the 38th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC), states reaffirmed their commitment to the right to education by adopting a resolution (A/HRC/RES/38/9) entitled ‘The right to education: follow-up to Human Rights Council resolution 8/4’.

On 3 July 2018, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on the violation of rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world.
