In the run-up to 2015, when the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will reach their deadline, several initiatives are underway to formulate a new set of goals and targets for sustainable development.

The Open Working Group on Sustainable Development Goals (OWG), a UN-appointed task force, has released a proposal for the whole development agenda, including education.

On 22 November, 2014 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to end early, child and forced marriages.

The Resolution urges States to: “enact, enforce and uphold laws and policies aimed at preventing and ending child, early and forced marriage and protecting those at risk, and ensure that marriage is entered into only with the informed, free and full consent of the intending spouse.”

Right to Education Project's partners the Global Initiative for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR), the Privatisation in Education Research Initiative (PERI), and the Ghana Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) have released the following press statement:

(Geneva, Accra, London) – In a report published last week, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) expressed its concerns “about the trend towards privatisation of education and the priority given to schooling of boys over girls” in Ghana.
