On Friday 26 November 2021, The World Organisation for Early Childhood Education (OMEP),  in association with the Right to Education Initiative and UNESCO, organised a seminar entitled ‘What’s happening with ECCE in the world? Latest research and current perspectives’. This seminar, which is part of OMEP’s 2021-22 series, featured the presentation of two new UNESCO reports.  

Over two days in early December, UNESCO held an International Seminar on the Evolving Right to Education to celebrate the organisation’s ongoing work on the futures of education, and to present the first stage of the UNESCO Futures of Education initiative - the report Reimagining our futures together: a new social contract for education.

The theme of this year’s Human Rights Day is equality - reducing inequalities, advancing human rights. How does this apply to education?

Over a period of 18 months, UNESCO has been supported by Her Royal Highness Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, UNESCO's Special Envoy, to facilitate the creation and implementation of a Global Partnership Strategy on Early Childhood (GPS).

On the 7 and 8 December, UNESCO will be holding the International Seminar on the Evolving Right to Education.

November was a busy month at UNESCO. The organisation held its 41st General Conference, at which a report on the future of education was launched, in addition to the adoption of the Paris Declaration, and the result of the 10th Consultation on the measures taken by Member States for the implementation of the 1960 Convention against discrimination in education.

Worldwide, early and unintended pregnancy prevents girls from accessing education - due to social isolation, stigma, poverty, and discriminatory legislation and practice.

On 29 October 2021, the 15-member UN Security council adopted a unanimous resolution, hailed as the first of its kind, which condemns attacks against schools, children and teachers and urges conflict parties to immediately safeguard the right to education. Importantly, the resolution makes explicit the links between education, peace and security. 

On Friday 26th November 2021, the World Organization for Early Childhood Education (OMEP), Right to Education Initiative, and UNESCO will hold a joint seminar on Early Childhood Care and Education.

This month, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education, Kombou Boly Barry, published a report on the right to education of migrants. The report considers the barriers that migrants face in accessing the right to education and calls upon States to revisit their legislations to ensure migrants have a rightful place in education and development policies.
