At its last meeting, on 3 September 2020, RTE’s Executive Board appointed three new trustees who bring additional expertise on fundraising and human resources:

  • Dina Hashem, Associate Director for Global Partnerships at Habitat for Humanity International

On March 15, 2020, the Kenyan government abruptly closed all schools and colleges nationwide in response to COVID-19, disrupting nearly17 million learners countrywide. The closure of institutions not only affected learners and teachers but it also brought forth numerous economic and social issues, including interrupted and loss of learning, education exclusion, homelessness, nutrition and economic crisis, childcare challenges and increase in teenage pregnancy cases, financial cost implication to households, and sexual exploitation among others.

RTE, together with the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and the Global Initiative on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (GI-ESCR), held webinars on 24 and 31 July 2020.

The discussions explored The Guiding Principles on the Human Rights Obligations of States to provide public education and to regulate private involvement in education (Abidjan Principles) and their application in the context of covid-19.

In France, the health crisis has exacerbated the educational exclusion of young foreign adults. For many, this period has made it impossible to go through all the administrative procedures necessary for their regularisation. This situation receives very little attention and the French educational community and civil society are working hard to highlight this administrative gap that compromises the right to education of so many migrant youth.
